I gave up my old phone number and would like to get it back. I’ve been unsuccessful so far, but the number appears to be ‘unused’ so I would think I can get it. Anyone have experience with this?

There is no way to get your old number back. It goes back into a pool of random numbers. There's nothing in the system for people to pick and choose their own.

You can reach out to Customer Care at 611 from your T-Mobile device to see if they can assign you the number you want, if available. No guarantees though.

Just spoke with Brian in Tampa office RE: obtaining an old number and assigning it to your T-Mobile phone. He was super helpful. I had just called my old number and it gave me the old familiarthe recording “this number is disconnected or out of service. According to Brian, numbers that are cancelled can take up to 6 months before that are available for assignment. He recommended googling t thisterm up this topic on Google or the like to find a site that will notify you when your target number becomes available.
