The Laxmi Vilas Palace, owned by the Gaekwads of Baroda in Gujarat, holds the title of the world’s largest private residence. Once rulers of Baroda, the Gaekwads’ influence continues, and the local community still respects and follows the family. Surpassing Buckingham Palace in size, this grand estate, currently led by HRH Samarjitsinh Gaekwad and Radhikaraje Gaekwad, covers a massive 3,04,92,000 sq ft. The property was reportedly built with an investment of £180,000 (approximately Rs 19 Lakh). Interestingly, the Indian palace is even bigger than Buckingham Palace, which is 8,28,821 sq ft. When compared to Mukesh Ambani’s Antilia, the world’s costliest home roughly valued at Rs 20,000 Crore, the Laxmi Vilas Palace stands as the world’s largest private residence.
This luxurious property has two massive courtyards with trees and fountains. The interior floors feature marble and mosaics, carefully maintained over time. The palace is full of weapons and paintings, including works by the renowned artist Raja Ravi Verma. Surrounding the palace are vast parks, golf courses, the Moti Baug Palace and the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum building. Additionally, the estate includes the Moti Bagh Cricket Ground and the offices of the Baroda Cricket Association, along with an indoor tennis court and badminton court.

Before Lakshmi Vilas came into existence, the Gaekwads used to live in either the Maharaja Palace, known as Sarkarwada or the Nazarbaug Palace. Major Charles Mant, who had previously built palaces in Kolhapur and Darbhanga, was appointed for the Lakshmi Vilas project, which went on to become his biggest project. Unfortunately, he faced challenges with his mental health and passed away during the project. Later, architect Robert Fellows Chisolm took over the completion of the palace.
