South: The south is home to many of the wealthiest towns and villages in the UK, says WealthInsight. New research from London-based global wealth consultancy WealthInsight reveals the most affluent small towns and villages in the UK. Windsor tops the list with over 850 millionaires, followed by Weybridge with 800.

It finds that the highest level of wealth exists in the south-east of England, with average wealth per head being £415,200 – around £195,400 more than the north's £219,750. Wealth inequality is on the rise across the nation, with the IPPR report stating the richest 10% hold almost half of all wealth.

South East of England is the richest region in the UK, as it contains the richest counties of the UK like Surrey, Hampshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex etc.

The decline of the heavy and textile industries after 1945 in the North, once England's richest region, lead to high unemployment, low productivity and low investments there. This was one cause for the North-South divide we have these days.

Throughout most of history agriculture has been the primary source of wealth and northern England is not as well suited for it as the south. The Thames and Severn valleys are vastly larger than the Vale of York and the hinterland of the Tyne when it comes to useable arable.

Wealth Spread Between Great Britain's Regions and Nations

The South East is the wealthiest of all regions with median household total wealth of £503,400, over twice the amount of wealth in households in the North of England.

The North West outranks London for self-made super-rich

The North West in particular, is a haven. Almost a quarter (22%) of Britain's wealthiest self-made millionaires and billionaires hail from the region, compared to just 19% from London (and with a population of almost one million less than the capital).

The wealthiest 10% of households held 43% of all the wealth in Great Britain in the latest period; in comparison the bottom 50% held only 9%. The richest 1% of households were those whose total wealth was more than £3.6 million (Figure 2). The least wealthy 10% of households had wealth of £15,400 or less.

Slavery drove the Southern economy while the Northern states were busy building an economic Leviathan. The North possessed 70 percent of the country's wealth… and invested in labor-saving devices, in both agriculture and industry. The South invested in slaves.

“It is people earning between £30,000-£60,000 a year, depending on the type of household, people who you would expect to be doing OK,” he said. “Being on a middle income does not make people secure. In the present cost of living crisis, the vulnerabilities of people on modest incomes have become more apparent.
