That this planet should exist at the exact right point in space and time to be inhabitable for life is a cosmic miracle. That it should be so laden with beautiful natural landscapes and manmade wonders is possibly the most wonderful luck humans have ever had.
The world is full of stunning scenery, but where is the absolute best of the best? According to the readers of Rough Guides, New Zealand is the most beautiful country in the world– but the UK does make it into the top ten.
The online travel guides company asked its readers to vote on what they thought was the most beautiful country on Earth, and their results have been verified, tabulated, and now, announced for the world to see.
Coming in sixth place overall, the UK was lauded for its ‘amazing food, friendly people and the fantastic diversity’. The list highlighted the huge variety of cultural landmarks in Britain, from iconic museums to the Scottish Highlands, as a reason for its success. It also mentioned Cumbria, the Cotswolds, and the Jurassic Coast of Dorset as must-sees.
As well as New Zealand, we Brits were beaten by Italy, Canada, Switzerland, and France, which are all probably fair victors. As gorgeous as some of our landscapes are, we can’t quite beat the towering Alps or aquamarine Cote d’Azur.
So if you’re looking for some budget travel inspo for this summer, don’t feel the need to leave this island. Turns out it’s not as bleak as we sometimes make it out to be.
