At just over 70%, the female employment rate in Germany is now over 10 percentage points higher than the OECD average, but still 8 percentage points below that of men (Chapter 11). Furthermore, almost 37% of employed women, often mothers, work part- time, compared to the OECD average of 25%.

Almost 84 percent of women in Germany were involved in professions or occupation connected to education, home economics or theology. Other professional groups with a high share of women in the workforce included medical health care and non-medical health care.

What percentage of mothers are working in Germany? ›

In 2022, a total of 67.5% of all parents were in active employment. 92.0% of the employed fathers worked full time while just 8.0% worked part time. For mothers, the opposite relation applied and it was less drastic: among mothers 28.5% worked full time and 71.5% part time.

The difference had steadily decreased until 2020, to 18%. It has remained unchanged since then. There are also regional differences within Germany: While the pay gap in western Germany stood at 19%, it was far lower in states that were formerly part of the communist East Germany, at 7%.

The world average for women in the workforce in 2022 was 39.49%. What about in the United States? The percentage of women in the workforce in the U.S. is just 7% higher than the world average, at 46.38%, ranking the U.S. at 71st out of the 180 countries.

Labour force participation up

On an annual basis, the labour force participation rate for women aged 15 years and older and all education levels grew from 58.5% in 1990 (the beginning of the current data series) to 61.5% in 2022. The rate for men declined from 76.1% to 69.5% over the same period.
