London has been named one of the safest cities to travel to in 2024.
The capital came out as one of the top on an annual list whittled down from 31 cities across the world curated by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. London took the eighth spot, ahead of Tokyo and Paris. The list was decided by respondents from various backgrounds and ages – millennials alone put London in the third spot before it was averaged out with parents' and elderly people's views.
London has made the list of top 10 cities and has climbed up the list since last year when it was at number nine, beneath Berlin.
But the study has taken many factors into account, such as hate expressed towards minority groups. Regarding safety for women and BIPOC or LGBT communities, London ranked sixth. In terms of violent crime, it was seventh and for transportation, tenth. In a survey by the same company revealing the safest countries for 2024, the United Kingdom claimed the sixth spot, with Canada coming out on top of the list – but Canada, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand have all been voted as relatively safe for years.
The lists come as a separate poll on Wednesday revealed that Londoners believe their city is the best place to live, despite concern over crime and rising expenses. Sixty per cent of respondents agreed that Londonis “the place I want to be at the moment”.
Meanwhile, even more respondents (64 per cent) expressed concern about crime and public safety, and 52 per cent said they worried about traffic congestion.
London came in at number eight, which is one up from last year. It scored particularly well in the safety of women, LGBTQ+ and people of colour category, though didn't do so well in terrorism or transport safety sections. But that's no surprise – especially to the city's cyclists.
