According to medieval sources, Ragnar Lothbrok was a 9th-century Danish Viking king and warrior known for his exploits, for his death in a snake pit at the hands of Aella of Northumbria, and for being the father of Halfdan

Sigurd Snake-in-the-eye's death is unknown. It is only known that he was overthrown by Olaf the Brash around the year 900. Bjorn Ironside died after holding the throne of Sweden for many years. Finally, Hvitserk was burned alive at the stake after being taken prisoner.

873 - The first to die was Ivar the Boneless, Ragnar's and Aslaug's oldest son.

According to the Icelandic sagas, Ragnar had two sons with Thora: Erik and Agnar. Erik would later become King Erik Weatherhat of Sweden. According to the Gesta Danorum, however, his sons via Thora were Radbard, Ivar the Boneless, Dunvat, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, Björn Ironside, and Agnar.

It claims that he was burnt alive by his captors. According to the saga Tale of Ragnar's Sons, Hvitserk inherited Jutland (Danish mainland) and Wendland (Luchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony) after the death of his father.

Aslaug suggested that she and her husband wait for three nights before consummating their marriage after a long separation while he was in England raiding. However, Ragnar was passionate after such a long separation and did not heed her words. As a result, Ivar was born with weak bones.

Fame is not an objective measure, so it is difficult to declare, definitively, who is the most famous of the Ragnarssons. The two most likely candidates are Ivar the Boneless or Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye.

Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye marries king Ælla's daughter Blaeja and they have a son named Harthacnu*t, who succeeds his father as the king of Zealand, Scania and Halland, but Viken rebels and breaks loose.

Rollo Against Ragnar

Rollo never paid Ragnar back for the many times he saved him. When he left him in Frankia, Ragnar was entrusting him with major responsibility again but Rollo did what he was best at; betraying Ragnar and his family. Rollo's betrayal broke Ragnar and led to his death.

Björn dies in Vikings season 6 after being stabbed by Ivar with a sword. He didn't die on the spot and managed to pull one final trick on his enemies. However, Björn's wounds were so severe he eventually passed away, but his legacy continued until the final episode of Vikings.

Did Ragnar's sons fight each other in real life? ›

After Ragnar's death in Vikings season 4, his sons became the protagonists and led the series until its end in December 2020. Björn, Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar got involved in many battles, including conflicts between them, and they all had different fates both in the series and in real life.

Battle of Arx Cynuit. Wind Hill, near Countisbury, Devon, possibly the site of the Viking defeat at the hands of local men in 878. Some mediaeval sources claim that Ubba led the vanquished army, and that he was among those slain. Most versions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle locate the battle to Devon.

Son of Ragnar. Sigurd was born with astigmatism in one eye, in the shape of a snake or dragon. This flaw has a damaging psychological impact on him, making him feel different from his older brothers and more estranged from the family.

As the oldest son of Ragnar and the only surviving child of Ragnar and the famous shield-maiden Lagertha, Bjorn already has the makings of a great warrior. Both of his parents are well-known for their actions during battle, and their leadership outside it.

He converts to Christianity at the end of Vikings, and Alfred seals his conversion by changing his name from Hvitserk to Athelstan. Hvitserk struggled more than his brothers in his search for greatness — never becoming a feared warrior like Bjorn, an adventurer like Ubbe, or the ruthless ruler that Ivar was.

Lagertha. Lagertha's death was expected since season 4, however, this doesn't mean that it was less painful to witness. The Seer revealed to her that she would be killed by the hand of one of Ragnar's sons and during the sixth season she was stabbed to death by a delirious Hvitserk.

It's the fate that Ivar narrowly avoided as a baby when Ragnar Lothbrok saw that Ivar had a deformity in his legs and took him to the woods to be left to his fate. The season 5 death of Baldur brings Ivar's story full in this way.

Torvi then flees Kattegat with Bjorn, Ubbe, Lagertha, and her children before finally fleeing to England where they are given refuge by King Alfred. Torvi and Ubbe are later asked by King Alfred to become Christians, to which they accept. Torvi and Ubbe are then baptized much to Bjorn's displeasure.

Magnus returned in Vikings season 5 and claimed to be Ragnar's son to Björn and wanted revenge for his exile and Ragnar's death. Magnus went as far as to consider himself a Viking and converted to Norse religion, but he died in battle when he was shot with an arrow by White Hair.

Ragnar then married Aslaug, also known as Randalin, the daughter of Sigurd and Brynhildr. They had four sons, Ivar the Boneless, Ubba, Hvitserk and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye (thus called because there was a mark in his eye, as if a snake lay around the pupil).
