When it comes to drawing, the environment or whatever’s happening around you at the moment can play a huge part in what ends up on your page. Music, noise, or whatever background sounds you’re hearing all have the power put you in the zone when you’re sitting down to draw. A fakulty member of ours named Veronica Lawlor even likes to hum and sing her own tunes when she is getting into her drawing groove. We asked the Sketchbook Skool community what kind of music they like to listen to while making art.

Here’s a list of music that get our community members in drawing mode

  • Quiet and silence
  • Mumford & Sons
  • The birds outside
  • John Hiatt
  • Volcano Choir
  • Birdy
  • Bon Hiver
  • Sigur Ros
  • Sufjan Stevens
  • Audiobooks
  • Pandora mix stations
  • First Aid Kit
  • Cello classical music (Bach’s Cello Suites, Yo Yo Ma)
  • The Cure
  • Spotify mix stations
  • David Bowie
  • Portishead
  • Hipster co*cktail radio station
  • Saint Etienne
  • White noise (from a smart phone app or an appliance in the room like a fan)
  • Shuffle on iTunes
  • Pink Floyd
  • Lisa Lynne
  • Aryeh Frankfurter
  • Mellow oldies
  • Buena Vista Social Club
  • Ella Fitzgerald
  • Pink Martini
  • Debussey’s Iberia
  • Podcasts
  • Frank Sinatra
  • Shostakovich
  • Boring technical conference calls
  • Blues
  • Sting

Whether it’s raging vocals or absolute silence, everyone seems to have a distinct preference when it comes to the perfect drawing soundtrack. What’s yours?
