Overall, the most common causes of death in Scotland are cancer, heart disease and stroke. However, a large number of different diagnoses make up these broad groupings, and it is of interest to look at the most frequently occurringindividual causes of death.
Chart 1 shows the ten most common causes of death for all ages in Scotland 2022.The most common underlying cause of death was ischaemic heart diseases (accounting for 11.3% of the total), followed bylung cancer (6.2% of the total) and cerebrovascular disease (6.1% of the total).
