LNER Reveals The UK's Friendliest Destinations 2024 (2024)

New research, from train operator LNER, has revealed that York, Newcastle and Edinburgh are among the top 5 friendliest destinations in the UK.

Despite each town and city in the UK offering its own distinct tourist attractions, visiting a place known for its welcoming atmosphere is likely a priority for many travellers.

The research, commissioned by LNER, analysed data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) on the personal well-being of residents in major towns and cities, as well as the number of five-star rated hotels and restaurants based on customer reviews from a leading travel platform. This data was then used to give each city a score out of 100.

Scoring well across the board, Blackpool tops the chart as the UK’s friendliest destination, with the highest number (143.3) of five-star rated hotels and restaurants per 100,000 people. According to the latest ONS data, residents of Blackpool report high levels of satisfaction, happiness and a sense of purpose in life, which accounts for the town’s exceptional hospitality.

Destinations along LNER routes, including York, Newcastle and Edinburgh also feature among the top five. Claiming third position, the historic city of York scores 71.4 out of 100. Boasting a high number of five-star rated establishments, and ranking sixth for life satisfaction, there is no doubt that the locals here are so welcoming to out-of-towners.

LNER’s findings show that Newcastle is one of the most hospitable cities in the UK. In fact, it ranks fourth in the number of five-star rated hotels and restaurants, equating to 76.9 per 100,000 people. This should come as no surprise, as it is a commonly acknowledged fact that the people of Newcastle are happy, warm and welcoming.

Coming in fifth place, Edinburgh is the most populated city among the top ten friendliest destinations. Not only well-known for its literary heritage, impressive architecture and world-famous festivals, the Scottish capital is also a place with warm and affable residents. Edinburgh scores 69.5 out of 100, and locals are reported to have high levels of life satisfaction and a strong feeling that things done in life are worthwhile.

Claire Ansley, Customer Experience Director at LNER, added: “Apart from culture, attractions, and surroundings, one of the most important factors when choosing a destination to visit is the hospitality of its people.”

“From striking up conversations in a local pub to receiving an act of kindness from strangers, visiting somewhere where locals are welcoming and affable can make a huge difference in your travel experience.”

“Whether you’re looking for a solo city break or family vacation, our research reveals the friendliest destinations in the UK, where visitors will receive an especially warm welcome as they make memories and enjoy their travel experiences."
