You need to have a device that uses visionOS, or iOS 15.2 or iPadOS 15.2 or later.
Your device needs to be connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network.*
You'll need your Apple ID and password that you used to set up your device.
On your iPhone or iPad, the Forgot Passcode? option appears when you have a device that uses iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later and you are connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. An Erase [Device] option appears if you have a device that uses iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2, iOS 16, or iPadOS 16 and you are connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network.
* If you restart your device when you see "Security Lockout" on the Lock Screen, you won't be able to reconnect to a Wi-Fi network until your device is unlocked. Cellular devices will reconnect to a cellular network if you have active service.
How to reset your device in iOS 17
If you're using an eSIM on iOS 16 or earlier, contact your carrier before trying these steps and ask for a QR code to set up your eSIM again.
From your device's Lock Screen, try to enter your passcode until the "[Device] Unavailable" screen appears and your device asks you to try again later.
When you're able to, tap the Forgot Passcode? option in the bottom corner of the screen.
On the Security Lockout screen, tap Start [Device] Reset to confirm.
Enter your Apple ID password to sign out of your Apple ID on your device.
Tap Erase [Device] to permanently delete all of your data and settings. If you use an eSIM with iOS 17 or later, you can also choose to keep your eSIM and erase your data, or to delete your eSIM and erase your data.
You can only reach the "Security Lockout" screen if you have an active cellular or Wi-Fi connection and previously enabled Find My on your device. After you try to enter your password ten times, your device will either erase itself or show Security Lockout and the Forgot Passcode? option without a timer, depending on how you previously set up your device.
If you recently changed passcodes, use your old passcode to temporarily sign in
From your device's Lock Screen, try to enter your passcode until the "[Device] Unavailable" screen appears and your device asks you to try again later.
When you're able to, tap the Forgot Passcode? option in the bottom corner of the screen.
Tap Try Passcode Reset.
Enter your old passcode then follow the onscreen instructions to set a new passcode.
Passcode Reset is not available on Apple Vision Pro.
The “iPhone Unavailable” screen pops up when there have been several unsuccessful password attempts. This is Apple's way of guarding against brute force attacks, where someone tries multiple passcodes to break into your phone.
What does iPad security lockout mean? It means that when you enter the wrong passcode several times in a row, your iPad shows Security Lockout. After the 5th wrong attempt, the device is locked temporarily, and you see a timer below the lockout message. This timer increases with the number of wrong attempts.
For 4-digit and 6-digit passcodes, the iPhone allows 10 failed attempts before it will be erased. So you get 5 chances before it disables, then 10 total before erasing data.
If you can't remember your passcode when you try again, you need to use a computer to put your iPad in recovery mode. This process deletes your data and settings, including your passcode, allowing you to set up your iPad again. After you erase your iPad, you can restore your data and settings from a backup.
How long is iPhone Security Lockout? That depends on your iOS version. On iOS 16 or later, after nine failed attempts, your iPhone may show you Security Lockout, try again in 8 hours. While on iOS 15.2 or later, before iOS 16, your iPhone will display Security Lockout, try again in 1 hour after the ninth attempt.
Press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold Side button until iPhone recovery mode appears. In iTunes, click "Restore" to erase your iPhone and remove the security lockout. This will wipe all data from your device. Wait for the restore process to complete, then set up your iPhone as new to get rid of (null) on iPhone.
Wait 2 hours or 3 depending on the message and try to remember the correct passcode. If you keep entering the wrong passcode, you will lock yourself out completely and then have to erase the phone and set it up again.
You need to change your password because there is a security concern (you have changed your password multiple times so this doesnt seem to be an issue). Or…
You have a balance on your Apple ID iTunes account.
