The modern motorsport legend is down to its final 250 cars marking the end of an era that will live on in Ford history.

Production ended in September 2006 without reaching the planned production target. Approximately 550 cars were built in 2004, nearly 1,900 in 2005, and just over 1,600 in 2006, for a grand total of 4,038 cars.

The answers are pretty straightforward. For starters, the model had got to the end of its production run one way or another. The GT is also a low-volume, high-cost production car. With so few produced each year, it would be hard for Ford to keep the GT rolling off the assembly line.

The race car sold for $11 million in 2012. The 1966 GT40 MkII that finished third at Le Mans came close in 2018 with a $9.79-million price tag.
